Give Local Louisville on October 1 and celebrate JADAC’s 40thGive Local Louisville is a 24 hour community day of giving showcasing over 200 local charities. For 24 hours we invite the entire community to celebrate this community icon and support JADAC with a $40 gift in honor of its 40th birthday.  With your support, JADAC will kick off another 40 years of serving people with addictions and substance abuse, continuing to plant seeds of recovery and hope for thousands of families.

40 Milestones to celebrate JADAC’s 40th

JADAC is 40 years old this year! Not only does Jefferson Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center have a birthday to celebrate but also a long tradition of being the front runner for substance abuse and addictions treatment in Kentucky.  For this ruby birthday, we’ve collected 40 milestones from the past 40 years, highlighting why JADAC continues to be the community icon it is today.

Milestones of JADAC

1975-1985

1975 Opened as Jefferson Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Center for Treatment and Research, offering inpatient detoxification, residential, and methadone services.
1979 Received first accreditation from the Joint Commission.
1979 JADAC introduces the Concerned Persons Program offering information and support to family members and friends of alcoholics and addicts. The program continues today!
1980 First meeting of JADAC’s Alumni Club.
1980 JADAC hosted Kentucky’s first Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting.
1981 Co-sponsored the area’s first Chemical Dependency Conference for professionals.
1985 Received first Metro United Way funding for Concerned Persons program.
1985 Began after school Intensive Outpatient Program for adolescents.
1985 Implemented first Family Day Program.

1986-1995

1986 Developed Kentucky’s first on-site alcohol/drug education and student assistance services program.
1987 Received Beautification Award for outdoor landscaping.
1988 Received one of nine federal funding grants for Project Connect, a research project to determine the best ways to serve homeless men with addiction to alcohol.
1990 Helped organize T.A.C.K. (Thoroughbred Addictions Council of Kentucky) to offer alcoholism and other drug dependency treatment to workers at Kentucky’s racetracks.
19901991 JADAC is designated as Kentucky’s official Chemical Dependency Treatment Training Institute.JADAC earned the Governor’s Award for Excellence for comprehensive programs, dedicated staff and community leadership.
1992 Created the first Intensive Outpatient Program for women in the state of Kentucky.
19921992 Offered the first alcohol and drug program in the Kentucky Women’s Prison at the Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women.Opened Renaissance House, the first aftercare halfway house for paroles from prison.  Renaissance House remained open until 2014.
1993 Project Link is created as a collaborative effort between JADAC and the Board of Health. Project Link focuses on serving pregnant/postpartum alcoholic and other drug dependent women and continues today!
1994 Opened Lighthouse, a residential treatment facility for adolescent dealing with alcohol and other drug dependents.
1995 JADAC and Jefferson County receive a national award for IV drug outreach services.

1996-2005

1997 Department of Child Protective Services contracts with JADAC to staff a substance abuse evaluation office.
1999 Helped establish the nation’s first sober-living public housing units at the Housing Authority of Louisville.
2000 Received HUD Best Practices for Residential Housing Award for Sober Living Program.
2000 Became part of the largest drug treatment research effort in history, the NIDA Clinical Trials.
2001 Project Link named Kentucky’s Outstanding Women’s Program of the year.
2003 Started providing services in the Metro Louisville Jail.
2003 JADAC publishes the 100th edition of the JADAC Journal, first created in 1978.
2004 Collaborated with Neighborhood Place to provide outreach and case management to all eight Neighborhood Places.
2004 Included in the National institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism research initiative through the U of L Kent School of Social Work.

2005-2015

2007 JADAC contracts with the Federal Probation/Parole office in Southern Indiana and Western Kentucky.
2008 The first Recovery Tree in Metro Louisville located on the JADAC front lawn remained intact with all recovery ribbons after Hurricane Ike knocked down street signs, , traffic lights and power to JADAC
2012 JADAC provided consultation to a delegation from Belize for their first addiction facility.
2012 A new Recovery Tree was built by JADAC staff as a permanent lobby display.
2012 Pathway to Recovery brick sidewalk installed to with meaningful engraved sayings  celebrating  recovery.
2012 Thirty-five artists from Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists donated 53 pieces of art around the theme of the Serenity Prayer.
2013 JADAC became the first facility authorized to accept Anthem BC/BS insurance for detox from opiates.
2014 JADAC and DCBS receive the Annie E. Casey Foundation Award for the START (Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Team) program.
2014 Became the only addiction treatment center to have both men’s and women’s and mixed gender Intensive Outpatient Programs.
2015 Jefferson County START program received Seven Counties Services Board Sunrise Award.
