Honoring Our Nation’s Military Heroes

October 31st, 2015

Supporting Veterans

Seven Counties Services is the preferred provider of behavioral health care and developmental services in Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble Counties.

Our service area is home to more than 75,000 veterans plus an additional 41,000 active duty soldiers. And while there are many, many available resources for our soldiers, there lacked a unified community resource for them to access. Seven Counties Services is one of the founding partners for the Veterans Community Alliance of Louisville. Our combined vision with our partners is to continually provide a unified, bipartisan, comprehensive community resource of available services for local heroes and their families to access. No veteran should lack the ability to find help, seek help or be helped due to the inability to access what’s available in our community.

Seven Counties is committed to improving the lives of those who put their lives at risk for our freedoms. We know that not all veterans seek treatment from the VA, nor do all veterans have benefits through the VA. Seven Counties is working tirelessly to fill the gap in providing services to our veterans through peer support, behavioral-health wraparound services, court mentoring programs, behavioral health therapies and brain injury programs.

Ray Feinberg, a Seven Counties Peer Support Specialist, is a perfect example. We found Ray through the Veterans Treatment Court where he serves as a mentor. We quickly got him involved in our Seven Counties Peer Support Specialist program and he now facilitates a “Double Trouble” support group. He actively participate in all SCS supported VCAL activities.

A Race To Remember

Seven Counties proudly supported the creation of the Mayor’s Week of Valor as a VCAL partner and immediately teamed up with University of Louisville’s Military Affairs Department to create the community’s only Run with Our Heroes 5K to give our community an opportunity to personally connect with our military from all branches. On Sunday, Nov. 8, the community has a chance to run or walk alongside our active duty and veterans on the campus of U of L as one of the official events of the Mayor’s Week of Valor. The family friendly event includes a kid’s activity area with face painting, bouncy houses and more all beginning at noon. The run/walk starts at 2 p.m. and is co-chaired by retired Coast Guard Lt. Theresa Reno-Weber, Chief of Performance and Technology for Mayor Greg Fischer, and LTC Thomas Russell-Tutty, U of L’s Army War College Fellow.

Col. Renee Finnegan (retired), director of Military Affairs at U of L, summed up the purpose of the event; “we live, work and play here and we like knowing that our community supports the work we do and we also like knowing that we, as veterans, can support efforts like VCAL to make sure each and every soldier has access to the many programs and services offered in the Metro area.” This event and all the Week of Valor events link our entire community with our active duty soldiers and veterans and puts the real faces of valor front and center all week long.

We look forward to hundreds participating in our Run with Our Heroes 5K, showing their support for our men and women in uniform. To register, visit www.runwithourheroes.org and click on the 5K link. Active duty and veterans discounts available.
