LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Still days away from Veteran’s Day, but there was no shortage of support for veterans in Louisville this weekend.

Hundreds participated in the Run with Our Heroes 5K, a run and walk to celebrate all members of the military, veterans, and their families. This was the second year for the race, put on by the University of Louisville and Seven Counties Services.

The event today was about physically showing veterans support, but also to raise money and awareness for the U of L Student Veterans Services Fund and Veterans Behavioral Health Support Programs at Seven Counties Services.

“As a veteran myself, I feel like that it’s important for us especially now with everything going on with the vets coming back having to deal with a lot of issues that they’ve had to go through and the support, whether it’s through a run or any other kind of volunteer. It helps them to realize that they haven’t been forgotten, that what they have done is important and people appreciate what has been done and how much they have put their lives on hold for the US and the individuals that live here,” Paula Green, a veteran who works for Seven Counties Services said.

Seven Counties says they are hoping to grow this race with the University of Louisville over the next few years to make it a destination race.

This was part of the Mayor’s Week of Valor, which continues tomorrow with the Kentucky Veterans of Year Banquet.
